Lore:The Leylines

From Kronopolis and the Flat Plane

Leylines in Idnum Aequalis is the lifeblood of the world. Like veins, the leylines' mystical and invisible pathways crisscross the world, influencing various aspects of the environment. Leylines are channels through which magical energy flows naturally. They act as veins of power, connecting different locations and regions in a mystical network. These lines can be thought of as pathways that carry magical energy, much like how rivers carry water. However two things are consistent; each type of leyline has one beginning and one end, and each leyline passes through the Primordial Tree.

Each Leyline has a unique influence on the environment it traverses and passes through. For example, the Heat Leyline might bring about hot and arid climates, while a Water Leyline could lead to lush and wet landscapes, or even seas and oceans. The Earth Leyline might lead to frequent earthquakes and the formation of unique geological features like mountains or new landmasses, while the Cold Leyline could lead to freezing temperatures, frigid arctic landscapes and chilling blizzards.

Leylines are for some spellcasters of great magical significance and importance, letting them tap into these Leylines to enhance their abilities, cast spells, or perform rituals. The nature of the Leyline greatly affects the potency of magic. These spellcasters usually refer to their source of magic as Primal magic

The Major Leylines

The major Leylines are the great shapers of the world. They lay the geographical foundations of incredible mountains and the deep unknown oceans, of the scorching deserts and the snow covered forests, they even shape the gravity of the world and its irregularities. Every major Leyline comes in a pair, where the relation between the two determines the effects on the world.

The further apart the Leyline pair is from each other, the more extreme the effects become from the Leyline and its influence on the world. The closer they are to each other, the more their influence becomes balanced between each other.

Below is a description of the major leylines.

Heat Leyline

The Heat Leyline is a mystical energy line that influences temperature patterns across the world. It emanates warmth and heat, causing areas within its influence to experience elevated temperatures.

Effects:

  • Deserts: Regions intersected by the Heat Leyline often transform into expansive deserts characterized by scorching heat, limited vegetation, and minimal rainfall.
  • Tropical Climates: Conversely, locations situated farther away from the Heat Leyline tend to have more moderate, tropical climates with lush vegetation, abundant rainfall, and vibrant ecosystems.
  • Flora and Fauna: Plant and animal species in Heat Leyline regions are typically adapted to survive in high-temperature environments, with drought-resistant flora and heat-tolerant fauna.

Cold Leyline

The Cold Leyline is a magical current that governs temperature patterns, leading to frigid conditions in areas where it holds sway. It radiates an aura of chilliness and cold.

Effects:

  • Frozen Landscapes: Areas influenced by the Cold Leyline may transform into frozen wastelands characterized by glacial formations, snow-covered terrain, and icy storms.
  • Temperate Zones: Conversely, regions situated farther from the Cold Leyline generally experience milder temperatures and more hospitable environments, making them suitable for agriculture and settlement.
  • Unique Features: Cold Leyline regions often boast distinctive natural features such as glaciers, ice caves, and unique ice formations sculpted by the constant cold.

Earth Leyline

The Earth Leyline exerts control over the stability and composition of the landmasses. It influences geological phenomena and the types of soil, rocks, and minerals found in an area.

Effects:

  • Earthquakes: Regions near an active Earth Leyline may experience frequent seismic activity, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
  • Mineral Riches: Areas influenced by the Earth Leyline could be rich in valuable minerals, gemstones, and precious metals, making them important mining hubs.

Water Leyline

The Water Leyline exerts control over water bodies, including rivers, lakes, and oceans, as well as precipitation patterns. It influences the availability of freshwater in an area.

Effects:

  • Water Abundance: Areas near a strong Water Leyline tend to experience abundant rainfall, leading to lush landscapes with fertile soil, thriving ecosystems, and numerous freshwater sources.
  • Water Scarcity: In contrast, regions distant from the Water Leyline often suffer from aridity, frequent droughts, and limited access to freshwater, making survival challenging.
  • Aquatic Life: The presence and diversity of aquatic life, including fish, aquatic plants, and amphibians, are heavily influenced by the Water Leyline. Rich marine ecosystems thrive near its influence.
